Santa Cruz’s longboards

A bit of history

Here are the top reasons Santa Cruz’s longboards and skateboards are so great:

It has passionate team members who care for the community needs and focus on manufacturing. Established in 1973, Richard Novak, Dough Haut and Jay Shuirman are the pioneers of Santa Cruz.

Aside from the business, Richard Novak, the founder, also commented that Santa Cruz is not about money but rather about the love for skateboards. With that vision, Santa Cruz’s iconic logo is the screaming hand, which shows the team’s hardcore spirit for skateboarding.

Over 40 years in the business, Santa Cruz has joined the NHS Inc. family to strengthen its position in the market. Today, NHS Inc. has become a multimillion-dollar company, owning over 13 famous skateboard brands as well.

I was impressed by knowing Santa Cruz is one of the oldest brands in NHS Inc portfolio. As time goes by, the community still continue supporting the brand with such enthusiasm.

Now let’s take a look at the deck quality!

My thoughts for both Santa Cruz longboards and skateboards are fully satisfied. The decks usually consist between 7 to 9 plies maple wood. This gives you a reliable skateboard to have fun over many years to come.

If you love skateboarding, you will love your dear skateboard (longboard). Therefore, I can promise you that the deck won’t easily chip over time, even you perform complex tricks.

There are many types of decks and shapes to consider here, such as:

  • W-concave
  • Concave with kicktail
  • Concave with pintail
  • Concave with shark tail
  • Camber Flex with the drop-down shape

So depending on your style and needs, just have fun with the browsing experience. This is a reputable brand we are talking, you don’t have to worry about the materials and components. You can feel relaxed while picking the best design that matches you.

As for me, I really enjoy and appreciate the colorful paintings. Not only the color mixes are attractive to everyone eyes, but also super high detailed.  Since they have lots of creative artists, you should take your time to browse through every style.

I can guarantee that each style and design worth your time! I have to admit losing a couple of hours browsing on the pages.

It feels like I was visiting an art museum!

If you are a funny and outgoing person, why not try some of the cartoon design? They have the iconic screaming hand, ninja turtles, monsters, scary faces, slimeballs, etc.

Make sure to pick the right color mixes that you feel right too!

Or you prefer something dark, wicked, and reserved, just take a look at some Guzman, Winkowski, and Dressen styles. Black is the main theme which goes well with skeletons and skulls artwork.

As you can see with these designs, they are professional made deck!

The deck material is even tougher with North American maple wood. I really like the wood finish too, they keep the paintings intact in case I like to shred and slide frequently.

The color mixes are brilliant and give you an energetic feeling at first glance. It seems like there is a soul inside each deck. Yes, the very soul of the artist as they transfer their passion on to the painting.

For these new deck, you also have the choice to customize with additional components. Or just getting the deck since you already have some spare parts at home. It is very stylish to build your own deck too!

All of the skateboard parts are under warranty of NHS Inc. Trust me on this, I bought several decks from NHS and still don’t have any defects issue over the years. You have all the power to personalize your very dear buddy.

There won’t be any identical skateboard (or longboard) when people buy from Santa Cruz. Usually, people will get an additional sticker or picking a better set of wheels for speed.

This is why I love about the freedom to customize. You can control the cost for each skateboard according to your budget. Then the company will ship the complete skateboard to your doorstep.

Now you’ve known which brand to trust, then it’s time to start choosing the right skateboard judging on your preferences. Here are our useful tips on selecting the right board for a beginner:

The first thing you’ll need to look into is the deck, and particularly, its width, length, and the materials.

If you look carefully, you will find that most skateboards will have a small sticker that indicates its width. For most cases, the choice of width comes down to the matter of personal preferences. Some might like the stable feeling of a broader deck, others might find thinner ones more comfortable. Just keep in mind that a wider board is more difficult to spin on the air due to their larger sizes. On the other hand, a wider board makes for a better landing spot.

For the length, the typical deck that you find at your local store would have the approximate length from 28 to 32 inches. Though it’s often referred to as an important factor by skilled skateboarders, you won’t likely have to worry about this if you’re still a beginner. Just make sure your boards fall into the standard dimensions.

Skateboard deck materials are not very diverse; in fact, you can count them using the fingers on your hand. Maple wood is the most widely-used material due to its impressive durability and flexibility. However, boards that are made from maple woods can be quite stiff compared to other types.

Bamboo decks are becoming more and more popular due to their bendy nature. This allows for better responsiveness on your skateboard, making it easier to perform tricks. Still, they’re not as durable as maple wood decks. And finally, the most advanced skateboard decks use carbon fiber providing both durabilities as well as the bendy level that skateboarders require. But then again, they will cost you a little more.

Apart from all the factors that we’ve mentioned, you should also choose a board with the graphic that you like. Make sure the ink is properly printed on your board so it won’t likely to fade away.

For the trucks, you need to make sure that they fit on the board. You can test it first by placing the truck horizontally following the width of the deck. If the axis doesn’t stick out too much (usually under 0.5 inches) then you’re good to go.

The reason being that if you choose trucks with the longer axis, then they’ll feel less secured and can be wobble sometimes. Not to mention that with big trucks, you’ll have giant wheels sticking out whenever you do a kickflip. And that would make things a lot harder.

Bottom lines, your trucks width should match with that of your deck.

Things can get quite complicated when talking about skateboard wheels since there are so many types of wheels with different designs on them. But for beginner’s sake, we’ll be introducing only the type that we would recommend you to use.

For most beginner skateboarders, a hard wheel with a diameter of 52mm and a durometer over 90A will be suitable for most of your activities. From my experiences, I think that is the perfect size for most skateboards. It’s big enough to perform well on most terrains and not too small to hit every single rock.

The bearings are small but essential components on your skateboards. They come with two common types, the standard metal bearings, and the better-quality ceramic ones. Again, the choices are yours to make since the two are both good for beginners.

Just keep in mind that ceramic bearings will make your wheels go faster. And they’ll also cost a little bit more.

Grip tape

It’s one of the most important components on the skateboards but is usually mistaken with the deck. When buying your first skateboard, you’ll have to add a layer of grip tape on the surface to make sure they stick to your feet while skating.

From my experiences, it’s best to choose the stickiest tapes that you can find since it’ll help you a lot in practice. And don’t care too much about your shoes being teared up, just accept it as a part of skateboarding.

Thanks for reading and we’ll see you in our future posts.
